RELAXERS AND HEALTHY HAIR... IT IS POSSIBLE! (PART 2)
RELAXERS AND HEALTHY HAIR (PART 2)
***Disclaimer, I am not a scientist or work in the medical field! Studies have been done that state that chemical relaxers can be harmful to a person. USE AT YOUR OWN RISK! However, the information provided below is for reading purposes only and to assist with providing basic information. I am in no way telling you what to do or how to do it. This is all my opinion!
Relaxers and healthy hair is possible, as possible as can be, I might add. You can have healthy relaxed hair. Now mind you, it may not be as healthy as natural hair that has not been compromised by chemicals, but it can be somewhat healthy with a relaxer and it can grow too. You just have to put in a lot more effort to keep your hair healthy.
Creating a regular regimen for your hair is the best way to begin your healthy relaxed hair journey. I am natural now. I've been natural for over 10 years. I decided to go natural because I received a bad relaxer service. It was not the relaxer that caused the damage. It was the stylist. The bad thing about it was that I was a licensed cosmetologist when this happened. I had been a licensed cosmetologist for 3 years when this happened. I mixed the relaxer up and I asked my co-worker to apply it. She was busy, but she was super willing to put my relaxer in. Doing the service wasn't the problem. It was the rinsing and shampooing of my hair is when the issues began. The stylist applied the relaxer like she was supposed to; however, once she started to shampoo my hair, she started to scratched my scalp. She was heavy handed and rather rough when shampooing my hair. Unfortunately, when she did this, it caused a lot of my hair to come out. She stated that my hair was shedding. It wasn't shedding. She pulled my hair out. This caused me to receive a lot of damage. That day forth, I decided to take care of my hair. Did I mention that I have fine hair?!? Yes, I do, so what happened made my hair look even thinner than originally. I got on YouTube (University) and started looking at various You Tubers and started to refer back to my text book. I also relied on what I knew and contacted a few of my fellow experienced stylist friends and created a regimen.
It took several months to a few years, but eventually, my hair grew back in and became a lot healthier. I stopped getting relaxers because of it. Before that incident, I got relaxers probably all of twice to three times a year. I now get only get a Chi smoothing treatment, which I give myself. I also color my hair. I have gray hair, so I like to cover it. So, I know many will say I'm not natural because of those two services. So, I guess I'm not, but hey who cares. I have hair on my head and that is all that matters to me and my hair is somewhat healthy. I do alot to my hair, so it is not as healthy as it should be. That is my doing because I have stopped sticking to a regimen. I have let life get in the way, so I have not been keeping up with taking care of my hair. I am trying to change that. It hasn't been easy.
My recommendation to have somewhat healthy relaxed hair is to make sure you deep condition your hair often and alternate between moisture and protein. I like reconstructors. They are the best of both worlds to me. I like Joico reconstructor and aphogee 2 minute reconstructor. I also like Redken Extreme conditioner. It is really good too. All of them are very good and do what they say they are going to do. I recommend you deep condition, bare minimum, twice a month. If you are doing more to your hair, then you will need to deep condition more often . It is your choice. Once you create a regular hair regimen, it will help your hair.
I know many of you will say, relaxers are bad for your hair and this and that. Yes, I know there have been some studies done on relaxers and some of the repercussions of them. I say read them and decide for yourself whether you want to continue using relaxers. You have to do what is best for you and what makes you feel Glamours! It is your choice.
